There have only been a handful of ripe figs, and they didn't start to ripen until late September. Mom thought the tree had died. We did have a bad cold snap this spring. But she got a big surprise the other day while weeding- she found these two "volunteers"! Pumkin seeds must have fallen in that part of the garden- through birds or compost. The bugs must not have seen these two growing. It's usually mid July that they stop blooming so much. Last year we were lucky. The iris is a big surprise, though! I haven't seen an iris in the garden since late June. Where did this one come from? Most of the veggie plants are about done. The tomatoes are still doing somewhat well, though the extra rain from Hanna caused some vine rot. There are a bunch on the top of the big tree that no one can reach. When they get too ripe, they fall off the tree and make a mess. One of the programs included raising insects such as ladybugs and praying mantis. Mom brought home a bug nursery with baby mantis- over a hundred of them. They were the size of a thumbnail last Friday...they've already tripled in size. They're eating the bad bugs, which is a good thing! I hope they continue to grow and eat...and reproduce!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most of the flowers are done. There are a few stray lilies and dahlias left, and the roses come and go. There are a lot of sunflowers! And there are still many peppers and cucumbers to harvest, too. I found some Anaheim chilies today. It gets bigger and bigger every year. They're really not supposed to get this big...Mom cuts branches off on a regular basis, and replants them. Sometimes they survive and grow into trees themselves!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v43/Kira74205/garden%202008/figtree2008.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="cursor: pointer; width: 400px;" src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v43/Kira74205/garden%202008/figtree2008.jpg" alt="" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is the "Son of Fig Tree that Ate Stafford County".  Actually, it's really more like a clone! This came from a cutting that Mom planted a few years ago. I've made casseroles out of the zucchini and other squash, and gazpacho and Benedictine sandwiches out of the cucumbers! My gazpacho is even better with fresh tomatoes from the garden, but they're not ripe yet. Mom almost always grows more than we can eat. They usually get frozen. These are bell peppers. This is just the blossom on top- the onion underground is nearly ready to harvest. He jumped out at me while I watered them. Then he just sat there, as if he was waiting for me to grab my camera! This one grew right by the driveway. Every bit helps. Last year there was a terrible drought.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mom planted her tomatoes last Saturday. It's just now warm enough. The peppers should be planted soon, too.
